South African manufacturer reports positive growth

Monday, 14th June 2004 (4141 views)

A South African gold jewellery manufacturer is proving successful despite a general decrease in the industry.

OroAfrica, the largest gold jewellery maker in South Africa has reported incredible growth with volume growing by just under 30 per cent last year, according to Mining Weekly.

The jewellery maker uses specialist computer aided technology for designs, which helps make items more intricate and boost production.

Martin Amman, head of the design team explained: "Apart from looking at a design in 3D and being able to make a printout for the goldsmiths, we can also make photo realistic renderings.

"This means that we can design a piece of jewellery in polished yellow gold, or matte platinum for example, put in stones and then calculate its weight in order to price it before we make it."

The firm is planning to increase its gold consumption from six tonnes a year to between 12 and 15 tonnes of gold per year within the next five years, with future growth planned for China and Japan.

The company has been running since 1998 and claims export is to stay an important area, as exports make up 75 per cent of its turnover.
