Islamic collection displayed after nearly three decadesWednesday, 9th June 2004 (3109 views) A new museum development has been approved in Athens and is set to house a collection of Islamic art including items made from gold.The Benaki Museum has revealed the 4.4 million wing is now on track, taking 28 years to complete mostly due to financial problems, according to The Art Newspaper. Two buildings will house the collection of 1,500 items, including ceramic works in gold as well as tombstones and armour. Items are split into four parts and feature from the seventh century through to the 19th century. Some Iranian jewellery from 1779-1909 in the Qajar period is also part of the new display. At present the exact opening date has not been announced.
