US retailers reveal optimistic sales outlook

Thursday, 13th May 2004 (4087 views)

US retail executives are optimistic about future sales according to April's Retail Sector Performance Index (RSPI).

The positive outlook could see jewellery sales increase and stop the need for huge discounts to be made on products.

Tracy Mullin, president and CEO of the National Retail Federation (NRF) told National Jeweler: "Now that retailers have more control over pricing, they are in the driver's seat.

"Consumers will still be able to find great deals, but retailers will be able to strategically mark down merchandise instead of offering sweeping discounts to reduce inventories."

The NRF's Executive Opinion Survey measures opinion on customer traffic, monthly sales, average transaction per customer, inventories and employment.

April's index ranking was up 10.5 points compared to the year before at 58.2, on the scale 50.0 is rated as normal.
