Hindu festival boosts demand for gold

Friday, 23rd April 2004 (4270 views)

Indian gold merchants were reaping the benefits of yesterday's Hindu Akshaya Tritiya as consumers flocked to buy gold.

Reportedly the festival has only become so popular since last year thanks to strong promotion from the World Gold Council.

Says K.V. Kishore, managing director, Jewels de paragon told The Hindu: "This festival became popular in Bangalore only last year, thanks to the World Gold Council. The Council has marketed the festival to attract people to buy more gold. Our sales have increased almost 15 times today."

In addition managing director of Navaratan Jewellers, M Gauthamchand, claimed that "direct advertising has helped people understand that the day is auspicious".

Jewellery shops stayed open until the early hours of the morning, with shops receiving visits from thousands of customers.

A number of Indians even booked jewellery weeks in advance to ensure they could purchase their items of choice and avoid the rush.

The most popular items were gold coins and traditional gold jewellery, with gold offered in a number of styles and at a range of different rates.
