Jewellery piercings on the increase

Monday, 19th April 2004 (4661 views)

Increasing numbers are getting their body pierced, in a bid to decorate their body in gold jewellery.

According to the Indiana Gazette it is now so common that body piercings are moving from shopping centres to tattoo shops.

Angela Giugliano, manager and body piercer at The Hole 3 explained: "This is very trendy now. Now it's like a rite of passage."

Piercings usually involve a hoop or barbell, available in gold, which are used depending on where the piercing is situated.

Dr. Zane Kirk, medical director at Pechan Health Center at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, has dealt with students whose piercings have become infected and recommends gold as one of the best metals to use for jewellery.

The most popular piercings are in the nostril, navel and tongue.
