Basel fair signals increase in US watch and jewellery demandMonday, 19th April 2004 (4398 views) High US demand in watches and jewellery has been reflected at this year's Basel fair.Business at this year's event is reportedly the best it has been since 2001, according to exhibitors from the industry's largest trade fair. Organisers of Basel World 2004 believe half of the global turnover for the sectors is a result of business at the fair, which features pieces from luxury companies such as Bulgari and Gucci. Francois Thiebaud, president of Tissot, one of Swatch's top three brands told Reuters: "Confidence is back. The first few months of the year were really excellent. (We saw) really good double digit (sales) growth." A host of gold items will be available from companies including Rolex, Timex Corp and LMVH's Tag Heur. The fair will have around 80,000 attendees this year, an increase of a fifth compared to 2003.
