Green and gold jewellery heralds St Patrick's Day in BostonFriday, 12th March 2004 (4843 views) Several local jewellers in Boston are celebrating St Patrick's Day in style, with a range of emerald and gold jewellery.Legend states that anyone not wearing green on the Irish saint's day faces the prospect of a pinch. Alpha Omega's showcase features an 18-carat yellow gold cross pendant laced with diamond baguettes and emeralds, a tennis bracelet with an emerald after every three diamonds set in 18-carat gold and a gold dragonfly pin with emerald wings and a diamond body. Barmakian Jewelers in Framingham is showcasing emerald bracelets, rings, pins, necklaces and earrings set in yellow gold, white gold and platinum. One of the highlights of its display is a 17-inch eternity necklace consisting of 100 diamonds and 20 emeralds set in yellow and white gold, according to the Southborough Jewelers is also showing a range of emerald jewellery including traditional Irish Claddagh rings, two hands clutching a heart in yellow and white gold, for men and women, featuring an emerald or diamond in the centre and an assortment of necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings made with emeralds. Emeralds are very soft and must be worn with care. Most of the fine emeralds come from South America, in particular Colombia. There are many well-known large emeralds including a 4 3/4-inch-high emerald in the Viennese treasury, cut from a single emerald crystal, which weighs 2,205 carats. Boston was the first city to celebrate St. Patrick's Day on March 17th 1737.
