Egyptian gold on display in North AmericaFriday, 5th March 2004 (3480 views) Connoisseurs in Canada are savouring some of the finest works of gold ever fashioned, with the advent of a major Egyptian display at The Royal Ontario Museum. The stunning new exhibit, entitled 'Eternal Egypt: Masterworks of Ancient Art', has arrived from the British Museum and boasts an impressive collection of gold jewellery that has helped shape centuries of craft. Highlights include famous works such as the golden 'Mummy Mask of Stadjehuty', with a number of masks complementing an extensive jewellery display. Assistant curator Roberta Shaw told Tandem that the craftsmanship on display was sublime as well as complementary to the existing works in the museum. 'As an art show with grand masterpieces from each period of history, Eternal Egypt complements our own permanent Egyptian galleries beautifully,' she said. 'It covers the same period as our galleries, which tell the story of this great culture mainly through archaeological objects of the material culture.' More than 3,000 years of Egyptian history, from c3100 B.C. to 170 AD, is on show, with the display set to visit a number of other Canadian cities, having already toured the US.
