Friday, 27th February 2004 (9708 views)

Plans have been announced this week for 10 gold souks to be opened in India.

Aerens Goldsouk International, the promoters of India's first exclusive jewellery mall, has scheduled the first souk to open in October.

At present, in what is a highly fragmented industry, the jewellery market in India is the world's largest at $20 billion, and in which the jewellery mall idea hoped to create a revolution.

President of Aerens, GS Pillai explained to the Times of India: 'By bringing the jewellers under one roof the Souk aims to redefine jewellery retailing standards which will encourage the Indian consumers, NRIs and foreign tourists to spend more on jewellery.'

Gold souks will be opened across a number of areas including Gurgaon, Jaipur, Bangalore and Hyderabad. They aim to offer value and convenience to consumers as well as a quality variety of gold.

'The Gurgaon Souk will showcase the best of Indian and international jewellery. A number of leading jewellers have signed up for Gurgaon. These are Allukas from Dubai, Talwar jewellers from Chandigarh, Hazoorilal of Delhi, Notandass from Mumbai among many others,' Mr Pillai added.
