Friday, 20th February 2004 (9008 views) Jewellery designer Laura Goulas said she switched from working in silver to gold because there was a market for it.<BR/><BR/>Describing the reasons behind her penchant for gold jewellery, Ms Goulas told the Commercial Appeal: I was seeing it in magazines. Everyone was wanting gold.<BR/><BR/>The designer, whose jewellery retails for between $200 and $1,100, has seen her designs worn by celebrities including Sarah Jessica Parker on a recent episode of 'Sex and the City' and Isabella Rosellini in the upcoming movie, 'The Pursuit of Happiness.<BR/><BR/>Ms Goulas, 32, is a rising star in fine jewellery design and her pieces are sold at more than 200 stores, including Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, Barney's and Joseph. <BR/><BR/>The jewellery has also been featured on the covers of magazines, including Town and Country, Cosmopolitan and InStyle. <BR/><BR/>Ms Goulas describes her designs as 'very feminine. Long, elegant. It can go either casual or dressy. It's very minimalist, too.' <BR/> <BR/>She uses hand-hammered, hand-brushed 14-carat gold in many of her pieces, accented with semiprecious stones, such as emeralds, tanzanites, tourmalines and carnelians.<BR/> <BR/>Laura Goulas now employs seven staff at her studio in East Memphis and everything is hand made from gold sheet or wire. The company turns out between $20,000 and $30,000 worth of jewellery a week.
