Gold industry promoted in Thai fashion celebrationsMonday, 16th February 2004 (4762 views) In a bid to promote a number of Thai industry sectors, including jewellery, a $78 million grand parade has been held in Thailand. The huge fashion extravaganza converted a two kilometre stretch of road into a catwalk and street party for three hours, with tens of thousands of people watching. Part of new strategies to convert Bangkok into an international fashion hub, the parade was to help the government's Bangkok Fashion city office fulfil its objectives in promoting Thai items such as gems and gold jewellery by 2012. The fashion city idea is also hoped to create new positive synergy for Thailand's $350 billion garments, leather and jewellery export industry. Gold Thai jewellery is often in great demand in the country, and also abroad. According to research firm Centre, Thai jewellery exports have blossomed in recent years, with exports to Russia, for example, increasing by 35 per cent.
