Leading analyst joins WGC to spearhead institutional investment

LONDON: Friday, February 25, 2000

Robert Weinberg has joined the World Gold Council to lead its international institutional investment programme. This programme has already achieved significant success in the US, where several institutions have recognised the growing potential of gold as a portfolio diversifier for investment funds. It is now to be extended across Europe under the management of Dr Weinberg.

Dr Weinberg has more than 25 years' experience of the international gold mining industry and is a figure familiar to all in the gold world. A former marketing manager of the gold and uranium division of Anglo American Corporation, and top-rated Extel gold mining analyst, he most recently was a director of the investment banking division of Deutsche Bank in London. Prior to that he was head of the global mining research team at SG Warburg. He gained his doctorate in geology from Oxford University in 1973 and then joined Anglo American, where he stayed for 12 years before joining James Capel, where he rose to become head of the international mining department. A British subject, he was born in Tripoli in 1947. He joined the board of Glencar Mining in 1999 as a non-executive director.

Haruko Fukuda, chief executive of the WGC, said: "We are delighted to have secured the services of someone with the exceptional experience of Dr Weinberg. His extensive knowledge of all aspects of the gold mining industry will prove invaluable to us as we drive the work of the Council further into institutional investment, an area we regard as having considerable potential for future gold demand."
